Soccer is the glue that binds the Argentine society together. The popular sport has, like nothing else, great powers to integrate different social groups and classes. When it comes to soccer all are equal. These fans of the Club Atlético Colón de Santa Fe had just arrived at their hotel in Buenos Aires to support their team in the match against the Boca Juniors. They were waving flags and singing and chanting out loud in anticipation of the game. That's the way real fans cheer and stand up for their team, right? The match took place yesterday in the Estadio Alberto J. Armando in La Boca which is also known as La Bombonera (The Chocolate Box). It ended in a draw (0 - 0).

Fans = fanatics. So much energy expended over a game. I don't get it, but some people do I guess.
I heard that the Superclassico was a couple of weeks ago and that the game was a fairly boring tie. Also, that both River and Boca are languishing far down in the standings. What's the world coming to?

Never understood this sports mania, either for soccer or American football - all those English soccer hooligans tearing up trains.
Can't see getting this excited over sports. But I'm in the minority. Maybe people bond over this and have a sense of belonging.

For some genetically unknown reason, we Americans don't "get" soccer.
I loved soccer ever since I was a child. I grew up in communism where almost everything was heavily censured and soccer was one form of entertainment they could not censor. I think it's been a bit spoiled lately by the big money that's been flooding it, but that is probably true for every sport.
Any team that is known as "the chocolate box" would have my unswerving support.
The role of soccer in Argentina must be fascinating. The great rivalry with Brazil. The connection with their European roots.
