Cliché of Buenos Aires

View on Palacio Barolo and Edificio la Inmobiliaria Eclectic Architecture in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Speaking of clichés, media and travel industry have created an image of Argentina and Buenos Aires in particular that consists mainly of tango, great food, great wine, great architecture, and great people. They tend to blank out all the not-so-nice parts of the city and the country. This is as unrealistic as expecting a crocodile to turn vegetarian. For many Argentines this city is a place to struggle to survive just like any other city in the world. The problem is universal: too much to die on but too little to live on. So, when you want to look behind all those clichés you have to leave the typical tourist routes. Don't be afraid. You will be surprised!

Buenos Aires before Sunset

Buenos Aires Cityscape View with UADE Building in the Center just before the Sunset
This picture was taken in the evening just before the sun set. This time of the day has the most intense light for photography. The backlighting from the sun made the city look absolutely atmospheric. Maybe you remember the last cityscape view where Buenos Aires appeared almost white. This time the city makes a more grayish and kinda dirty impression, almost a bit smoggy. In the center of the picture you see the UADE building, the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa. This educational institution ranks among the top five of Argentina's universities.

Buenos Aires, the White City

San Telmo Cityscape View over the White City Buenos_Aires, Argentina
You are overlooking Buenos Aires or the White City, as I call it. From atop the roofs you get the impression that the city has been covered with white powder. Wherever you turn, from afar the whole city seems white-washed and pristine. The barrios you are looking at are Monserrat and San Telmo. Almost every building, every structure, every surface, even the sidewalks appear white.

Working Hands: Fábrica de Pastas

Fábrica de Pastas: Handmade Pasta in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Making fresh pasta is not all that complicated. It involves typically only a few ingredients but all the more handwork which can be physically demanding on the hands and wrists. This gentleman certainly mastered making pasta from scratch. I so much enjoyed watching him handling the dough mass with his classic pasta machinery. Unfortunately, I just witnessed the penultimate steps - the extruding and drying. Yes, you guessed it, the fan is to dry the pasta.
It's truly amazing to see how food is coming into existence. I really appreciate good old handwork and the care that goes in it. Not to mention the trust it creates on the customer's side.

Havana in Buenos Aires

Restaurant and Bar "Rey Castro" in Monserrat in Buenos Aires, Argentina
No, it's not the real Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro on that balcony having a speech to his followers in Buenos Aires. It is just the promotional mascot of the Cuban restaurant called "Rey Castro". If you like Cuban and Latin food, go check it out. It's located at 342 Peru Street. There are also performances and entertainment in the evenings.

The Invasion of Killer Pigeons at "Plaza de Mayo"

Backlit shot of a bunch of tourists gazing at a crowd of pigeons at the "Plaza de Mayo" in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Yes, I'm kidding but they do have pigeons in Buenos Aires too. Yeah, quite a few... and there are even more to come. ;-) The invasion on Plaza de Mayo is because everybody is feeding them. Actually, tourists like them.
