Public-Private Sponsoring in Buenos Aires

These street name signs in Buenos Aires are proudly presented by Claro and Sony Ericsson
These streets are proudly brought to you by...
The sponsoring of street name signs in Buenos Aires is quite common but still surprising. Companies put up street signs branded with their corporate logos. They are almost everywhere throughout the city and it seems pretty normal to have these kind of advertising. I wonder what would happen if they were not sponsored. Would they simply disappear? Would street name signs even exist then?
Do you know other cities where the street name signs are branded?

City-wide corporate sponsorship — first time I've heard of it!

About your question in my blog: Yes, there are still some Filipino families who speak Spanish regularly in their homes, especially those who can trace their ancestry back to Spain. In fact, some of them still have families in Spain. When I was in college, Spanish was still a requirement, and many Filipino languages have words which are obviously Spanish in origin.

We've got corporations sponsoring sports arenas, and even some schools, but no streets as yet - good grief, is it going to come to this in the U.S.

Yikes!

Great shot!

If you've ever been in Rio, must be seen the advertising above the plates of the street names. Its a way to raise funds by City Hall.

Of course they are doing it to flush money into the city's pocket. Still, it feels a little odd.

It is an interesting concept and one many cities will adopt in time. Perhaps everything will go corporate eventually, at least it seemed that way a year ago. Now things have definitely slowed down with recession and so many companies going out of business, but once they rebound this trend will probably continue because it is a great way to advertise.

Personally, I'm in favor of it as long as the street signs are tastefully done. Better street signs with advertising than no street signs at all in some places.
