Buenos Aires Skyline versus Biodiversity

Buenos Aires Skyline, View from Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, Argentina
The Buenos Aires skyline is relatively young and yet incomplete. The best view is either directly from the Río de la Plata or from the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve as in this case. This huge peaceful morsel of nature was formed by landfill from demolished buildings during the 1970s. Since then it developed itself into a biodiversity hotspot. It's ornithologist's paradise and an important bird area. Sadly, the biggest threat to this park is the skyline itself that comes ever so close. Let's hope the property sharks will keep their greedy hands off the nature reserve.

The Calm before the Tourist Storm

Empty Beach in Punta del Este, Ready for the Tourist Storm, Uruguay
The beaches around Punta del Este are still secluded and empty. But soon enough, visitors from all over South America will head to the exclusive Uruguayan resort at the Atlantic Ocean. Needless to say that those tourists are mostly upper and upper middle class people because Punta del Este is a first world village devoted to celebrating money. It is the hotbed of Brazilian and Argentine high society, or those who fancy themselves as such. The locals call them chetos, which is just another word for the rich, the snobs and their like. Let's see if they come as numerous as last year.

Buenos Aires before Sunset

Buenos Aires Cityscape View with UADE Building in the Center just before the Sunset
This picture was taken in the evening just before the sun set. This time of the day has the most intense light for photography. The backlighting from the sun made the city look absolutely atmospheric. Maybe you remember the last cityscape view where Buenos Aires appeared almost white. This time the city makes a more grayish and kinda dirty impression, almost a bit smoggy. In the center of the picture you see the UADE building, the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa. This educational institution ranks among the top five of Argentina's universities.

Buenos Aires, the White City

San Telmo Cityscape View over the White City Buenos_Aires, Argentina
You are overlooking Buenos Aires or the White City, as I call it. From atop the roofs you get the impression that the city has been covered with white powder. Wherever you turn, from afar the whole city seems white-washed and pristine. The barrios you are looking at are Monserrat and San Telmo. Almost every building, every structure, every surface, even the sidewalks appear white.

Argentina Jeopardy

View on the Cityscape of Rosario from the Tower of the National Flag Monument, Argentina
You are looking at the third-largest city in Argentina which is only five car hours away from Buenos Aires. The city that lies on the Parana River in the province of Santa Fe is considered the cradle of Argentina's national banner. A great way to observe the cityscape is from the tower of its famous landmark, a patriotic monument that was built to honor Argentina's flag and its creator General Manuel Belgrano. What else do we know about this city? The famous/infamous Ernesto 'Che' Guevara was born here. Students appreciate the opportunity to choose from more than ten national colleges and enjoy the vivid nightlife that comes with them.
Have you guessed the city yet?

Buenos Aires Concrete

Concrete Cityscape, a Southbound Panorama of Buenos Aires, Argentina
Concrete, like everything else, depends on what you make of it. Looking at it objectively, concrete is a compound of cement, water and diverse aggregates. But concrete is more, it is the very material from which our cityscapes are formed. People, however, make a city thrive, not bricks and mortar. A city is an interaction of thousands of social and cultural elements and concrete is its body. As an inevitable fact in today's living reality, concrete is tangible, visible, unavoidable, often repellant but a hard to ignore partner.

Thanks again to the guys from LandingPadBA.com. I took the picture from the rooftop of Jed's apartment building.

Good Morning Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is Glowing like a Ruby in the Winter Morning Sun of Argentina
Like a ruby sparkling in the morning sun touched by a soft glow of winter light. It was the dawn of a new day, the awakening of a wonderful city. After every night follows a bright day, ready-made to conquer, to enjoy, to fill with meaning. Vivid light was inevitably pouring through the streets and over the rooftops. I couldn't get enough of this delightful spectacle. Me and my camera were desperately busy snapping the fleeing beauty into our memory. The mood was magic. Good morning beautiful!

Mind-Blowing View over Buenos Aires

Amazing View from above on Buenos Aires Facing North-West to Colegiales and Parts of Palermo, Argentina
If you thought Buenos Aires is breath taking from the ground, consider this magnificent view from above. This vantage point facing north-west offers an entirely new perspective on the neighborhood of Colegiales and parts of Palermo. It's an extraordinary experience. One wish one could fly over Buenos Aires like a pigeon!

Many thanks to Jed from LandingPadBA.com. I took the picture from the rooftop of his apartment house.

Marina Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires

Marina in Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires, Argentina
There are many marinas in and around Buenos Aires which permit locals and visitors to enjoy the stunning waterways of the Rio de la Plata area. This rather small marina in Puerto Madero is located very central. It is a great place for those visiting and staying in the city of Buenos Aires. From here it is just a 15 minute walk to Plaza de Mayo.
What do you think is it that makes people passionate about sailing?

Burial Monuments for Eternity

Quiet Lane in the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires
The Cementerio de la Recoleta is not just a place with graves and tombs. It is a place with many ancient stories to tell. That is why I like this place a lot. Only persons of noble rank or birth were buried here but the cemetery has lost a bit of its prominence over the years. Nowadays only a few funerals take place per year. On the other hand it is becoming a major tourist attraction in Buenos Aires.
Have you ever thought about your private mausoleums?

Railroad Tracks in Buenos Aires

Railroad tracks serving as dividing line between Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood in Buenos Aires, Argentina
The railroad tracks in the picture serve as a dividing line between Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood, both part of Palermo Viejo. In the background you can see the still evolving skyline of Palermo Hollywood. Porteños began to call this area Palermo Hollywood because of the vast presence of film, television and radio production companies which produce content not only for the domestic market.

Cityscape of Mausoleum Rooftop Crosses

Christian crosses and stone figurines guarding the dead of the aristocrats' cemetery in Recoleta, Buenos Aires
Several crosses and stone sculptures form a densely packed religious skyline overlooking the famous cemetery "La Recoleta". The cemetery in the heart of the city is one of the most popular and most visited places in Buenos Aires and has a world of exciting things to see.

Obelisk of Buenos Aires

Sunset on "El Obelisco" in the center of "Plaza de la Republica" amidst the world's biggest avenida "9 de Julio" in Buenos Aires
The most significant monument in Buenos Aires is probably "El Obelisco". The obelisk was built on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the first city founding. Since its inauguration on May 23, 1936 it is proudly standing at the intersection of Nueve de Julio and Corrientes avenues.

Heavy Rain Hit Buenos Aires

Facing the looming, dark sky of an thunderstorm in the streets of Buenos Aires, Argentina
This was pretty much the view out the window that I had on the approaching storm the other day in Buenos Aires. I just made it into a restaurant before the thunderstorm hit. Gradually it became dark and the rain started. I watched with awe.

It´s do or die

Litter Service "Cliba" crossing the intersection Calle Florída and Avenida Corrientes aka Broadway of Buenos Argentina
Yeah, I guess they serve Coca Cola at the "La Casona". Noisy advertisement is typical for Corrientes Avenue, the "Broadway" of Buenos Aires. This street can be very crowded at night.

Sunset on "El Obelisco"

El Obelisco the center of the "Plaza de la República" (Republic Square) at the intersection of "Avenida Corrientes" and "Avenida 9 Julio", the world's biggest avenue, in Buenos Aires at sunset
The picture was taken while the sun was setting on "El Obelisco" after a beautiful summer day. The monument is located at the center of the "Plaza de la República" (Republic Square) where Avenida Corrientes meets the world's biggest Avenue, Avenida 9 de Julio.
